Early childhood intervention (ECI) is specialised support for babies and young children aged between 0-9 years old who have a developmental difference and/or disability, and their families.
It’s all about helping your child learn, grow, and take part in everyday life, and giving your family the tools and confidence to support them along the way.
How early childhood intervention can help
Every child is unique, and so is every family. ECI supports your child’s development in areas such as:
- Communication and social skills
- Movement and coordination
- Learning and play
- Behaviour and emotional wellbeing
- Self-care and independence
Support for families
In ECI, families are at the heart of everything. Professionals work with you (not just for you) to understand your goals, routines, and what matters most. You might receive support from a team that includes:
- Early childhood teachers
- Speech pathologists
- Occupational therapists
- Physiotherapists
- Psychologists or social workers
You’ll usually have one main contact person, a key worker, who helps coordinate supports and brings in other specialists as needed.
